Franklin Pierce, 1853, by George Peter Alexander Healy

Franklin Pierce's 210th birthday was celebrated on Nov. 25 at Old North Cemetery - where he is buried - in Concord. Pierce, the 14th U.S. president, is the only president from New Hampshire. Born in Hillsborough, his actual date of birth is Nov. 23, 1804.

The New Hampshire Army National Guard was in attendance to lay a wreath at his gravesite. The guard was joined by students from the Christa McAuliffe School and the Governor’s Horse Guard.

A wreath is sent by the White House every year to commemorate his birthday and his contributions. Pierce was president from 1853 to 1857. He served in the New Hampshire Legislature from 1829 to 1832, and was the speaker in the final two years. He was also a member of Congress.
